Project Rainbow
Science education at school-level in India is strongly oriented towards test
taking. The number and popularity of the "entrance coaching centers" is a
testimonial to the ongoing extreme mechanization of test preparation. Science
education is reduced to cramming a mass of meaningless facts, and acquiring a
skill in manipulating symbols. In addition, the tradition of science
popularization is nearly non-existent in India barring the efforts of a few
exceptional individuals (for example,
Arvind Gupta
).
Moreover, popular science content is very scarce in India's regional languages
which are rich, however, in other forms of literature. Obviously a great deal
has to happen to stem this alarming trend and make science learning a living and
happy experience.
Project Rainbow is a small
experiment to serve that end. It aims to provide
all science content from primary school to high school, in the form of games
and activities, presented in Indian languages.
